Surgeons at Trincomalee District General Hospital have successfully extracted a 3.1-kilogram bladder stone from a 52-year-old patient in what medical experts believe may be the largest such stone ever removed and documented.
A surgical team at Trincomalee District General Hospital achieved what doctors describe as a historic medical milestone by removing an exceptionally large bladder stone weighing 3.1 kilograms from a middle-aged patient. The procedure, performed last Friday, involved extracting a stone that specialists claim represents the largest ever documented in surgical literature worldwide.
The operation was led by Consultant Urologist Dr. Pragaladhan Balakrishnan, who emphasized the collaborative nature of the achievement. According to Dr. Balakrishnan, initial diagnostic examinations identified the unusually large stone formation, leading to referral for specialized surgical intervention. Following the successful removal, the patient demonstrated satisfactory recovery, with medical staff reporting the individual to be in good health.
Hospital Director Dr. Sandamali Samarakoon highlighted the significance of the accomplishment for Sri Lanka's healthcare sector, crediting the medical team's expertise and efficient use of available resources. She noted that the successful management of this complex case demonstrates the capability and professionalism of the country's public health system.
Medical staff indicated that the patient is expected to be discharged within days and continues recovering well. The successful procedure represents a notable achievement for Sri Lanka's healthcare infrastructure and the specialist medical professionals working within the public hospital system.
