The Urban Development Authority has opened its first wellness centre at a Colombo housing complex as part of a broader Metro Uplift programme aimed at improving resident health across multiple dimensions.
The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has inaugurated its inaugural wellness centre at the Sirimuthu Sevana housing complex in Bloemendhal, Colombo 14, marking the beginning of a coordinated health initiative across urban residential areas. Deputy Minister of Urban Development Eranga Gunasekara oversaw the opening on Monday, which was attended by representatives from multiple government agencies working collaboratively on the project.
The Metro Uplift programme brings together the Ministry of Health's Estate and Urban Health Unit, the Department of Ayurveda, the UDA, Urban Settlement Development Authority, Colombo Municipal Council and regional health authorities. The centres are designed to address health needs across physical, mental, social and spiritual dimensions through a combination of preventive care, treatment and wellness services.
The facilities will offer screening for non-communicable diseases, communicable disease prevention programmes, elderly care services, drug prevention initiatives and maternal and child health support. Additional services include nutrition guidance, adolescent health programmes, eye clinics and accident prevention education. The centres will also incorporate wellness activities such as yoga and meditation alongside selected traditional medicine services including oil treatments, acupuncture and Ayurvedic beauty treatments, reflecting an integration of conventional and alternative therapeutic approaches.
During its initial phase, the programme will establish wellness centres across eight housing complexes in Colombo, including Lakhiru Sevana, Laksanda Sevana and Sathhiru Sevana. The government intends to expand the initiative to cover all 24 UDA-managed housing complexes during 2027. A medical clinic for elderly residents was also conducted on the opening day to support the launch.
