Public Health Inspectors across Sri Lanka have launched a symbolic strike, taking sick leave to protest the unilateral transfer of a senior officer stationed at Katunayake Airport.

Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) nationwide reported sick leave on August 21 in a coordinated symbolic protest against what they characterize as an unauthorized personnel decision. The action specifically targets the transfer of the most senior PHI attached to the Katunayake Airport Health Office.

According to the Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors' Association, the decision to stage the strike was made during an executive committee meeting held on August 19. General Secretary Chamila Muthukuda stated that the protest aimed to register opposition to the transfer procedure. The Association has indicated that the transfer was carried out unilaterally, suggesting a lack of consultation with relevant parties.

As an extension of their protest, PHIs withdrew from all dengue control operations nationwide beginning August 20. This escalation underscores the seriousness with which the Association views the transfer decision. The organization has formally submitted its grievances to the Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Media, requesting intervention to address the underlying dispute.

The strike represents the Association's attempt to draw attention to procedural concerns regarding personnel transfers within the health sector, while maintaining essential health services through selective withdrawal from non-critical duties.
