The Old Boys' Association of Prince of Wales' College is organizing a two-day six-a-side cricket tournament featuring 16 leading schools, aiming to revive the fast-paced format while celebrating the institution's 150th anniversary.
Prince of Wales' College in Moratuwa will host a landmark six-a-side cricket tournament on August 29 and 30 at the De Soysa Stadium as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations. The tournament, organized by the College's Old Boys' Association, will bring together 16 leading school cricket teams in a knockout competition format designed to showcase attacking cricket and provide emerging players with a platform to demonstrate their abilities.
The six-a-side format has rarely featured in major inter-school competitions in recent years, and organizers view the anniversary celebration as an opportune moment to revive interest in the format, which is known for its fast pace and spectator appeal. The College has a distinguished cricketing heritage, having produced several players who represented Sri Lanka at the international level, including national team member Kusal Mendis, who is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony.
The participating schools include Royal College Colombo, St. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia, Ananda College Colombo, Wesley College Colombo, Richmond College Galle, and ten others. Organizers anticipate attracting more than 5,000 cricket enthusiasts from Moratuwa and surrounding areas over the two days. The tournament will conclude on August 30 with an awards ceremony attended by distinguished guests including Eran Wickramaratne and representatives from participating schools and the cricketing community.
Beyond competition, the tournament aims to promote sportsmanship and fellowship among participating institutions. The Old Boys' Association has acknowledged corporate sponsors whose support made the event possible, highlighting the ongoing partnership between the College, its alumni, and the business community in supporting educational and sporting initiatives.
