Sri Lanka's National Building Research Organisation has issued highest-level evacuation alerts for multiple areas in the central districts following deteriorating weather conditions, with warnings extending across Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura districts.
The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has activated 'Red' level landslide evacuation warnings for six specific areas across three districts in response to ongoing adverse weather. The highest alert status applies to Udadumbara, Ganga Ihala Korale, and Pasbage Korale in Kandy District, Yatiyanthota in Kegalle District, and Ambagamuwa and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya District.
Beyond the critical zones, the NBRO has instituted Level 2 (Amber) warnings across additional localities including Doluwa, Udapalatha, and Delthota in Kandy, as well as Deraniyagala, Bulathkohupitiya, and Aranayake in Kegalle District. Nuwara Eliya District is under similar Level 2 warnings for areas including Kotmale East and Kotmale West. Ratnapura District has received Level 2 warnings for Opanayake, Ratnapura, and Imbulpe. Lower-level Yellow alerts have been extended to select zones including Hanguranketha and portions of Kegalle as a precautionary measure.
The warnings remain active for a 24-hour period from midday on 3 January through midday on 4 January. The NBRO has advised residents in affected areas to implement immediate protective measures, particularly those observing visible landslide indicators or experiencing sustained heavy rainfall. Authorities have emphasized vigilance among communities in all designated warning zones to prevent casualties and property damage.
