Educational authorities have announced the closure of all government and private schools in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts on August 4 as heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions continue to affect the Central Province.
All schools in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts will remain closed on August 4 due to persistent heavy rainfall and severe weather conditions affecting the Central Province, according to announcements from education officials and provincial authorities.
The closure encompasses all government schools across five education zones in Nuwara Eliya—namely Nuwara Eliya, Hatton, Walapane, Kotmale, and Hanguranketha—as well as private institutions in the district, according to the Nuwara Eliya Zonal Education Director D.M.S.D. Dissanayake. The Central Province Education Ministry Secretary issued instructions to declare a holiday across all education zones in the district. Similarly, all government schools in Kandy District will also be shut for the day.
Education authorities cited safety concerns as the primary reason for the decision. Continuous rainfall and sudden weather fluctuations have created hazardous conditions for students and teachers traveling to and from schools. Beyond immediate safety risks, authorities expressed concern about potential flooding, landslides, rockfalls, and disruptions to transportation networks across the affected areas.
The announcement was made by the Chief Secretary of the Central Province, signaling a coordinated response from provincial administration to the weather emergency affecting both districts.
