Following a May order from the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekara has been officially promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General, with the promotion taking effect from August 2020.
The promotion of Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekara to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) was finalized on Friday when the Inspector General of Police issued the official notification. The advancement comes after the Administrative Appeals Tribunal issued a directive in May instructing the National Police Commission to elevate Abeysekara following his appeal inquiry.
Under the tribunal's decision, Abeysekara's promotion carries retrospective effect dating back to August 25, 2020. This retroactive application means his advancement in rank is recognized as having taken place several years prior to the official announcement, likely affecting accumulated benefits and service records accordingly.
Abeysekara, who initially joined the Sri Lanka Police as a Sub-Inspector in February 1986, has progressed through multiple ranks during his four-decade career in law enforcement. His previous positions include Inspector, Chief Inspector, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Superintendent of Police, and Senior Superintendent of Police before reaching the DIG rank.
The promotion is expected to necessitate a change in Abeysekara's current assignment, as he is anticipated to vacate his position as Director of the Criminal Investigation Department following his elevation to the higher rank.
