Sri Lanka's Railway Department is progressing on several major initiatives including line extensions, electrification, and new train procurement, with most projects expected to reach key milestones within the next year.
The Railway Department is advancing a portfolio of significant infrastructure projects aimed at improving rail capacity and service reliability across the country, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena announced in Parliament this week.
Among the priority initiatives is the proposed extension of the Kelani Valley railway line to Ratnapura. A feasibility study for this extension, which would run from Avissawella, is currently underway and is projected to conclude by December. Following completion of the study, the department plans to proceed with detailed design work and procurement activities. Additionally, the Railway Department and Road Development Authority are jointly developing plans to address congestion caused by four rail barriers on the Kosgama-Avissawella section, while a separate proposal to double-track the Polgahawela-Kurunegala line remains under consideration.
Electrification of the Colombo suburban railway network is also progressing, with a feasibility study in its final stages and construction anticipated to begin in 2027. To address operational challenges on the Coastal Line, the department has identified 12 bridges requiring reconstruction. Tenders have been issued for all bridges, with contracts already awarded for two, and the remainder expected to be finalised before year's end. The department has also ordered 10,000 rail clips to address track condition issues, though delivery has been delayed due to regional conflict, with arrival anticipated within weeks.
The procurement process for five new Diesel Multiple Unit train sets has reached the mid-evaluation stage, with contract award targeted for late 2026. The department's 2027 investment proposals additionally include purchasing five bi-directional train sets and five new locomotives.
