Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister of Economic Development clarified that parliamentary salaries remain unchanged, though fuel allowances for MPs and other government officials have been revised upward to reflect current market prices.
The government has maintained unchanged base salaries for Members of Parliament while adjusting fuel allowances paid to MPs and other eligible public officials, according to Deputy Minister of Economic Development Nishantha Jayaweera.
Speaking in Parliament on July 7, Jayaweera explained that the fuel allowance revision was implemented in response to improvements in Sri Lanka's economic conditions. He stated that the adjustment aligned the allowances with prevailing fuel prices in the market, affecting all government officials entitled to such benefits.
The Deputy Minister clarified that while parliamentary salaries themselves have not increased, the upward adjustment to fuel allowances has resulted in a net increase to the total compensation received by MPs. He emphasized that this measure applied uniformly across government officials receiving fuel benefits, rather than being a targeted change for Parliament alone.
