Police arrested six individuals in the Gona Kowila area of Rathmalana following a drug-related operation that uncovered weapons, explosives, and cash suspected to be drug trafficking proceeds.
The Crimes Prevention Unit of Mount Lavinia Police arrested six suspects in the Gona Kowila area of Rathmalana, seizing an array of weapons and other items during the operation. The recovered items included three swords, three knives, a locally manufactured hand grenade, and other sharp weapons. Officers also found Rs. 300,000 in cash believed to be connected to drug trafficking activities, along with eight mobile phones.
The arrests stemmed from an earlier apprehension made by the Special Motorcycle Unit of Mount Lavinia Police in the Arthur Place area of Rathmalana. That initial stop resulted in the seizure of 1,000 milligrams of Crystal Methamphetamine, commonly known as Ice. During questioning of that suspect, investigators obtained information about the source location for the drugs, leading them to a house allegedly used for distribution operations.
Following this lead, police conducted a search operation at the identified location, which resulted in the discovery of the weapons and currency. The primary suspect in the case is 29 years old, while the five other individuals range in age from 22 to 51 years. The suspects are residents of Rathmalana, Nawalapitiya, and Eheliyagoda.
The arrested individuals are scheduled to appear before a Magistrate, with police expected to request detention orders to facilitate ongoing investigations into the matter.
