A rice supplier has been convicted and fined Rs. 1 million by the Polonnaruwa Magistrate's Court for selling Red Nadu rice above the government-mandated maximum retail price.
A major rice mill has been ordered to pay Rs. 1 million in fines following a court conviction for pricing violations, according to the Consumer Affairs Authority. The Polonnaruwa Magistrate's Court found the supplier guilty on Thursday of selling Red Nadu rice at Rs. 225 per kilogram, which exceeded the government-set maximum retail price of Rs. 220 per kilogram that has been in effect since 2022.
The case was pursued by the Consumer Affairs Authority, which took legal action against the rice supplier over the pricing breach. The court's decision resulted in the imposition of the Rs. 1 million penalty, marking an enforcement action under Sri Lanka's price control regulations for essential commodities.
