Parliament has been notified of three petitions filed before the Supreme Court challenging the 22nd Constitutional Amendment Bill, as the legislative process continues.
The Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, announced during today's proceedings that copies of three petitions challenging the 22nd Constitutional Amendment Bill have been received by the House. The petitions were filed before the Supreme Court and represent formal challenges to the proposed constitutional amendment currently under consideration in Parliament.
In addition to the challenges against the 22nd Amendment, the Speaker also informed Parliament of petitions received relating to the Judicature Amendment Bill. These petitions form part of the constitutional framework that governs the treatment of bills that face legal challenges before the country's highest court.
The receipt of these petitions marks an important procedural step in Sri Lanka's legislative process. As the bills remain before Parliament, the petitions filed before the Supreme Court will be processed according to constitutional provisions designed to handle such challenges. The simultaneous advancement of both the amendment bills through Parliament and the legal challenges through the courts reflects the multi-layered scrutiny applied to major constitutional changes in the country's governance framework.
