The government has declared August 21-23 as days of national mourning following the death of veteran singer Nanda Malini, who passed away at age 82. Public viewing and final rites have been scheduled at designated venues in Colombo.
Sri Lanka's government has proclaimed a three-day period of national mourning in honour of Nanda Malini, one of the country's most celebrated musical figures, who died on August 20 at her residence in Nawala at the age of 82. The Government Information Department announced that August 21, 22, and 23 would be observed as days of national mourning throughout the island.
Members of the public will have the opportunity to pay their final respects as the remains of the Visharad Dr. Nanda Malini will be displayed at the Nanda Malani Sangeetha Ashramaya, a music academy located in Nugegoda, from 10:00 a.m. on August 21 through 3:30 p.m. on August 22. Her funeral rites are scheduled for Saturday, August 22, at 5:00 p.m. at the General Cemetery in Borella.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake shared his condolences on social media, characterising Nanda Malini as "a true musical legend of our time." The President noted that her enduring contributions to music had resonated with generations of Sri Lankans across age groups, and emphasised that her artistic legacy would continue to influence the nation's cultural landscape for years to come.
