Authorities have restored order at Magazine Prison in Borella following an incident involving over 40 inmates, with plans underway to relocate suspected instigators to other facilities.
The Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara announced that tensions at Magazine Prison in Borella have been fully contained after an incident that saw significant disruption within the facility. The situation escalated when a prison officer intercepted a parcel thrown over the prison wall, triggering what sources describe as a coordinated response by more than 40 inmates who breached cell locks and left their designated areas.
Authorities launched a coordinated containment operation involving prison officers, police personnel, and members of the Police Special Task Force to manage the disturbance and restore normal operations. The effort successfully returned all inmates to their cells and prevented further escalation of the incident.
In response to the breach, the government has implemented enhanced security measures within and surrounding the prison compound. Personnel from the country's three military branches have been stationed at the facility, while Sri Lanka Air Force drones have been deployed for aerial surveillance. Additionally, approximately ten inmates identified as key figures in inciting the unrest have been scheduled for transfer to other correctional institutions.
