A Japanese-Sri Lankan joint venture has inaugurated an advanced textile chemicals manufacturing facility at the Biyagama Export Processing Zone, creating 281 jobs and bringing international production standards to the island's apparel sector.
Asahi Dyes and Chemicals SL (Pvt) Ltd., established through a partnership between Japan's Asahi Dyes and Chemicals Co., Ltd. and Sri Lankan firm Asons Ltd., has launched operations at its new manufacturing complex in Biyagama. The facility represents a US$20.4 million investment designed to produce textile dyes, printing chemicals and finishing chemicals for regional export markets across Asia and Southeast Asia.
The project brings Japanese manufacturing technology and international quality standards to Sri Lanka's textile and apparel industry, according to Board of Investment Chairman Duminda Hulangamuwa. He described the investment as a means to deepen vertical integration in garment manufacturing, noting that while economic diversification remains important, the apparel sector continues to offer significant potential for growth and development.
The facility has been constructed to meet LEED v4 green-building standards and incorporates environmentally responsible production systems. Operations include water conservation measures, energy optimization, advanced wastewater treatment and carbon-emission reduction initiatives aligned with environmental, social and governance principles. The complex is expected to reduce Sri Lanka's reliance on imported specialty chemicals while improving supply-chain efficiency for textile manufacturers.
Asahi Dyes and Chemicals, founded in 1932, currently operates facilities in Japan, China and Vietnam, producing specialty chemicals for textiles, pharmaceuticals and electronics. The Sri Lankan venture also connects with Italian technology company Tonello, which specializes in textile processing solutions, linking the facility to an international network of manufacturing innovation. The investment is anticipated to create direct employment opportunities and expose local professionals to advanced manufacturing systems.
