Sri Lanka's Paddy Marketing Board has acquired approximately 19,600 metric tons of paddy across multiple districts within three weeks, operating through 71 purchasing centers at government-set rates.
The Paddy Marketing Board has successfully purchased 19,592 metric tons of paddy within a three-week timeframe, according to a statement from Board Chairman Manjula Pinnalanda. The procurement initiative spans twelve districts across the island, including Mullaitivu, Ampara, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Hambantota, Kurunegala, Matale, Monaragala, Vavuniya, Ratnapura, Trincomalee, and Kilinochchi.
The purchasing operation is being conducted through 71 collection centers established to facilitate farmer participation. The government has established differentiated pricing structures based on paddy variety to encourage production of specific types. Nadu paddy is being purchased at Rs. 120 per kilogram, while Samba paddy commands Rs. 130 per kilogram, and Keeri Samba fetches the highest rate at Rs. 140 per kilogram.
This procurement drive represents part of the government's efforts to stabilize paddy markets and support domestic rice production. The multi-district approach and extensive network of purchasing centers suggest a coordinated effort to ensure accessibility for farmers across various regions of the country.
