A nationwide environmental initiative called "Aththama" National Cleaning Day will begin on August 8, organised by multiple government agencies to promote community cooperation and public responsibility.
A comprehensive cleaning programme is set to commence across Sri Lanka on Saturday, August 8, marking the observance of the National Day for Environmental Community Coexistence. The "Aththama" National Cleaning Day Programme, coordinated by the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, the Progress Secretariat, and the Sri Lanka Army, will begin at 8.00 am and reach all Grama Niladhari divisions throughout the country.
The initiative will operate under the oversight of Progress Committees and District and Divisional Secretariats. According to organisers, the programme is designed as a monthly undertaking, with major cleaning operations scheduled for each district and divisional area. The effort aims to revive the traditional concept of "shramadana"—community mutual assistance—particularly among younger generations, while fostering stronger public responsibility for maintaining shared spaces.
Beyond simple sanitation, the programme targets multiple objectives including the improvement of underutilised public facilities, cultivation of positive attitudes towards public property, and maintenance of cleanliness in high-traffic areas such as roads and marketplaces. Officials stated that the initiative will also address environmental conditions that facilitate disease transmission, ultimately contributing to a healthier population and sustainable environment.
Multiple state institutions are participating in the effort, including the Presidential Secretariat, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, the armed forces, police, Civil Security Department, and the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment. Organisers anticipate the programme will strengthen civic responsibility, improve living standards, and enhance social cohesion within communities while developing environmentally conscious citizens.
