A Colombo court has directed authorities to provide enhanced security for alleged drug trafficker Shiran Basick, who is currently being detained and interrogated by the Crime Investigation Bureau under a 90-day Prevention of Terrorism Act order.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court has instructed law enforcement to strengthen security arrangements for Shiran Basick, a suspect facing allegations of major drug trafficking operations. Basick, who was apprehended in Dubai and subsequently extradited to Sri Lanka, remains in custody at the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau near Narahenpita Police Station, where he is undergoing questioning under a 90-day detention order issued under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

During court proceedings, Basick's legal representative, Attorney-at-Law Wasantha Pithigala, raised concerns about inadequate security measures during the suspect's detention and interrogation. The counsel highlighted that Basick is transported on foot each morning from the police station to the investigation bureau, a procedure that could potentially expose him to threats. Following these submissions, the Magistrate ordered the Officer-in-Charge of Narahenpita Police Station and the Director of the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau to implement appropriate protective measures.

Investigators have also sought court permission to access Basick's telephone and banking records as part of their ongoing inquiry into his alleged involvement in drug trafficking. However, the Chief Magistrate clarified that certain investigative requests fall outside the court's jurisdiction, instructing authorities to obtain necessary approvals from the appropriate court with relevant authority over those specific matters.
