India has positioned itself on the brink of victory in the Galle Test match, establishing a 288-run lead after declaring with a total of 193 in their second innings. Sri Lanka lost four wickets while reaching 84 runs in their chase, leaving them requiring a record victory to stay in the contest.
India strengthened its grip on the fourth day of the Galle Test, with the hosts now facing an uphill battle to secure victory. Rishabh Pant's aggressive 66-run innings off 69 deliveries proved instrumental in India's second-innings total of 193, allowing the visiting team to declare and leave Sri Lanka chasing 288 runs for victory. The pitch at Galle continued its expected deterioration, creating challenging conditions for batting as the match progressed into its final phase.
Sri Lanka's bowlers made a spirited effort to contain India's second innings, with fast bowler Asitha Fernando taking four wickets for 41 runs—his best performance at home since Suranga Lakmal's four-wicket haul in 2019. Despite this resistance, partnerships between Indian batsmen such as KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal, who added 65 runs together, kept the momentum moving forward. Pant's inventive stroke-play proved particularly effective, as he employed unconventional techniques including dancing down the pitch and pulling short deliveries to reach both his half-century and his 100th career six.
India's bowling attack demonstrated exceptional coordination in Sri Lanka's chase, with Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna claiming key wickets. The Indian team employed a balanced approach, with fast bowlers occupying ten of the first twenty overs and producing two wickets for just 20 runs during Sri Lanka's opening phase. Notably, debutant Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who replaced the concussed Dinesh Chandimal, was dismissed in his very first Test over, caught off Suthar's delivery. By the time bad light ended play, Sri Lanka had reached 84 for four wickets, trailing by 204 runs.
