Intense rainfall has caused widespread flooding across Sri Lanka's central regions, with authorities warning of potential additional flood risks in coming days.

Severe weather conditions have resulted in flooding affecting multiple areas of Sri Lanka's central highlands. According to the Disaster Management Center, 16 houses in the Kitulkotte locality of Nawalapitiya have been submerged by floodwaters, prompting authorities to relocate residents to temporary shelters in safer locations.

The heavy precipitation has also triggered flooding in low-lying zones adjacent to the Mahaweli River. The Department of Irrigation reports that water levels in the Mahaweli are currently rising at Peradeniya, reflecting the intensity of rainfall in the region.

Looking ahead, water management officials have issued precautionary warnings for the Kelani River basin. The Department of Irrigation cautioned that a minor flood situation could develop within the next 48 hours in lower-lying areas along the Kelani River, particularly in the Dehiowita, Ruwanwella, and Seethawaka Divisional Secretariat divisions. These warnings stem from heavy rainfall recorded in the upper and middle catchment areas of the basin, which typically precedes downstream flooding.

Authorities have not provided information regarding the number of people currently displaced or detailed assessments of property damage from the existing floods.
