Fifty families displaced by a March 2023 landslide in Badulla have been officially handed over permanent housing through the Government's Navodhayapuram Housing Project, ending nearly three and a half years of temporary shelter.
Families affected by a devastating landslide in the Kabaragala area of Haldummulla, Badulla have finally received permanent housing after spending nearly three and a half years in temporary accommodation. The March 2023 landslide destroyed homes and displaced multiple families, many of whom subsequently sheltered in an abandoned tea factory in the Makanda area of Poonagala while awaiting long-term solutions.
The Government formally handed over the completed Navodhayapuram Housing Project under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's leadership at an official ceremony. The initiative forms part of the administration's stated policy agenda, "A Prosperous Country, A Beautiful Life," which prioritizes improving living conditions for plantation communities and supporting families recovering from natural disasters.
The project encompasses 50 fully constructed residential units, with each beneficiary family allocated a 10-perch land plot and a modern house measuring approximately 550 square feet. According to the Government, each housing unit was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 3.2 million, bringing the total project investment to approximately Rs. 160 million.
The housing project represents a significant infrastructure undertaking aimed at permanently resolving displacement issues stemming from the natural disaster. With the handover now complete, the 50 families have transitioned from makeshift conditions to permanent residential housing with access to their own land.
