A new housing initiative providing homes to families displaced by the 2023 Badulla district landslides was officially transferred to beneficiaries today under presidential patronage.
The Navodayapuram housing project was formally handed over to 50 families who lost their homes in landslides across the Badulla district in 2023. The handover ceremony took place today under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The affected families had been displaced from areas including Haldummulla, Poonagala, Kabaragala, and surrounding regions following a major landslide event in March 2023.
Each residential unit in the project has been valued at approximately Rs. 3.2 million and built on 10-perch plots of land. The houses measure 550 square feet and contain two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, and bathroom. Beyond the structures themselves, the beneficiary families will also receive household and kitchen appliances valued at roughly Rs. 175,000 per household.
The displaced families had been living temporarily in a closed tea factory for nearly three and a half years following the Kabaragala landslide. The Navodayapuram initiative represents an effort by authorities to provide permanent housing solutions for those affected by the natural disaster. According to the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure, all 50 houses have been fully furnished and are ready for occupation by the recipient families.
