Colombo Magistrate's Court has granted bail to former Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and a fuel station employee following their remand on corruption allegations. Both suspects face travel restrictions.

The Colombo Magistrate's Court has ordered the release of former Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and an employee from his fuel station who were held in custody on corruption charges. Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued the bail order on August 18 after reviewing arguments presented by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and legal representatives of both suspects.

The court has imposed bail conditions on each suspect, though sources differ on the precise amounts. One report indicates each person must provide two surety bails of Rs. 500,000 each, while another source states the requirement is two personal sureties of Rs. 5 million each. Both accounts confirm that a travel ban has been placed on the suspects as an additional condition of their release.

The bail order follows the initial remand of both individuals pending investigation into the alleged corruption. The case remains under investigation by CIABOC, which presented its position to the court during the bail hearing.
