An audit committee has been established under presidential supervision to examine alleged financial irregularities across ten Divisional Secretariat offices in the Nuwara Eliya District, with particular focus on welfare payment schemes.

Authorities have initiated steps to form an audit committee under the oversight of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to investigate financial irregularities reported at Divisional Secretariats across the Nuwara Eliya District. According to Nuwara Eliya District Development Committee Chairman and Member of Parliament Manjula Suraweera Arachchi, the inquiry will examine records spanning 2023 to 2026 across ten Divisional Secretariat offices in the district.

The investigation will prioritise allegations of fraud related to 'Aswesuma' beneficiary payments at the Norwood and Talawakelle Divisional Secretariats. Beyond this specific case, the committee plans to assess whether disaster relief funds distributed following Cyclone Ditwah reached affected residents appropriately, and verify the proper disbursement of Rs. 5,000 allowances provided to low-income families under the Samurdhi programme during the COVID-19 pandemic period.

The audit's scope will extend to examining government subsidies and assistance provided to Samurdhi beneficiaries and senior citizens to ensure payments reached their intended recipients. MP Suraweera Arachchi has appealed to beneficiaries and members of the public to come forward with any information regarding suspected irregularities prior to the formal audit commencement, inviting them to contact him directly with relevant details.
