Bangladesh has indicated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not travel to India until New Delhi extradites former premier Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country during civil unrest in 2024 and now faces a death sentence.

Bangladesh's foreign ministry stated on Sunday that establishing appropriate conditions is necessary before Prime Minister Tarique Rahman undertakes a visit to India, with the primary obstacle being the status of former premier Sheikh Hasina. A foreign ministry official told reporters that Dhaka has requested India accelerate efforts to extradite Hasina and other individuals who fled the country.

Hasina departed Bangladesh following widespread anti-government demonstrations that toppled her administration in 2024. She currently resides in India and has been convicted in absentia of crimes against humanity, carrying a potential death penalty. Despite her legal situation, Hasina declared this month that she intends to return to Bangladesh in December, even if it results in her imprisonment. The foreign ministry official noted that Hasina's continued media appearances have complicated diplomatic efforts, describing them as inconsistent with her status as a convicted criminal.

India's government has characterised Bangladesh's extradition request as "under examination," without committing to action. Rahman assumed office in February and has since visited Malaysia and China, notably departing from the customary pattern where Bangladeshi leaders typically direct their inaugural international visits to India. Recent meetings between officials from both nations, including a visit by India's High Commissioner last week, had sparked speculation about a potential breakthrough, though negotiations appear stalled.

Bangladesh has also signalled a shift in its foreign policy framework. Officials indicated the government will prioritise a "Bangladesh First" approach emphasising national sovereignty and non-interference while maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with India and other nations. The diplomatic impasse reflects broader tensions stemming from Hasina's flight and the subsequent change in government.
