Sri Lanka's Cabinet has approved funding to procure vehicles and equipment for maintaining and operating the country's expressway system, which currently covers 312 kilometers and is preparing for expansion.
The Cabinet of Ministers has sanctioned a Rs. 1.2 billion investment to acquire new vehicles and specialized equipment for Sri Lanka's expressway network. The decision comes after the Road Development Authority flagged deteriorating machinery on existing routes and highlighted the need to prepare infrastructure for several upcoming expressway sections scheduled for completion between 2027 and 2028.
The procurement initiative will support operations on newly planned routes, including the Port Access Expressway, the first section of the Central Expressway, and the route from Pothuhera to Galagedara. The funding will be drawn from revenues generated by the expressway system itself, allowing for targeted reinvestment in network maintenance and safety.
The equipment purchase encompasses 21 categories of vehicles tailored to expressway operations and maintenance. These include four double-cab pickup trucks for management and toll collection duties, ambulances, aerial and telescopic boom trucks for maintenance work, specialized cleaning vehicles for pedestrian walkways and water jetting, firefighting equipment, and three tow trucks designated for accident recovery. The Transport, Highways and Urban Development Ministry presented the proposal, emphasizing that the new resources are essential for maintaining safety and operational efficiency as the expressway network expands.
