OpenAI has introduced a plugin allowing ChatGPT to read and respond to Apple Messages on Mac computers, though the feature requires extensive permission grants and has prompted privacy concerns.

OpenAI has released a new plugin that integrates ChatGPT with Apple's Messages application for Mac users, enabling the chatbot to search through message histories and compose replies on behalf of users. The feature is currently limited to those with ChatGPT Work and Codex subscriptions. According to Bloomberg, the plugin permits users to retrieve missed conversations and draft responses directly through the chatbot interface on their desktop computers.

The integration is designed as an opt-in feature, requiring users to grant multiple layers of access before activation. During setup, users must authorize ChatGPT to access their device's message history, enable Full Disk Access through Mac's System Settings, and provide permission to contact lists and automation tools. This multi-step approval process means the plugin cannot be accidentally installed.

The development raises questions about data privacy and security, particularly given the absence of clarity regarding whether Apple collaborated with OpenAI on the plugin's creation. Apple has previously taken aggressive action against third-party applications seeking access to its messaging services. In 2024, the company repeatedly disabled Beeper Mini's iMessage integration until the company ceased its integration efforts.

The timing is notable given recent tensions between the two technology companies. In July, Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging the artificial intelligence company engaged in trade secret theft by specifically recruiting Apple employees to obtain confidential information. The Messages plugin launch comes amid this ongoing dispute between the firms.
