Government officials have outlined plans to speed up demining operations, including expanding the trained personnel deployed and securing additional resources to achieve landmine-free status within the coming years.
A meeting held at Parliament focused on accelerating Sri Lanka's demining initiative under the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply. Chaired by Housing Minister Dr. Susil Ranasinghe, the discussion brought together Defence Deputy Minister Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retired), Army Commander Lieutenant General Nilantha Premaratne, and the National Demining Programme Director to address operational improvements.
According to Ada Derana, the meeting prioritised increasing the number of trained military personnel engaged in demining operations to 500 personnel. Officials also discussed securing the necessary resources and logistical support to enhance the pace of landmine clearance across the country.
The demining initiative is currently regarded internationally as one of the world's most effective programmes of its kind. Government officials expressed confidence that with accelerated efforts and expanded personnel deployment, Sri Lanka could achieve landmine-free status within the next few years, marking a significant milestone in post-conflict recovery efforts.
