The Irrigation Department has withdrawn flood warnings for the Kelani and Kalu river basins after water levels receded to normal following a brief period of elevated flow.
The Irrigation Department has cancelled flood warnings that were issued for the Kelani and Kalu river basins, citing a return to normal water levels across both waterways. The alerts had been implemented on the previous day after monitoring detected elevated river conditions in the region.
According to the Department's records, warnings were triggered when the Kelani River reached major flood levels at 1:30 p.m., while the Kalu River displayed minor flood conditions at 2:00 p.m., followed by minor flooding in the Kelani River at 3:30 p.m. However, water levels subsequently declined, prompting authorities to lift all associated advisories.
The Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the Irrigation Department stated that it maintains continuous surveillance of rainfall activity and river water level fluctuations throughout the country. Officials indicated that if water levels again rise to concerning thresholds, early warning notifications will be issued promptly to affected communities and stakeholders.
