Authorities in Nuwara Eliya have opened the spill gate at Gregory Lake following a rapid rise in water levels caused by heavy rainfall in the area, while implementing several safety measures.
The Nuwara Eliya Disaster Management Centre opened the spill gate at Gregory Lake on the afternoon of December 4th in response to swiftly rising water levels driven by heavy rainfall affecting the region. The decision to release water through the spillway was made as a precautionary measure to manage the accumulating volume in the lake.
In coordination with the water management response, the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council has temporarily halted boating operations on Gregory Lake as a safety measure. The suspension was implemented due to the combination of severe weather conditions and dense fog currently blanketing the Nuwara Eliya area, which have created hazardous conditions for water-based activities.
Local law enforcement has also issued guidance to road users navigating the region during these adverse conditions. Police advised motorists traveling on the main routes connecting Nuwara Eliya to Badulla and Hatton, as well as the Nuwara Eliya-Kandy route and the Toppass-Labukele area, to proceed with heightened caution. The dense fog obscuring visibility on these roads poses significant risks for vehicle operations.
