Authorities in Sri Lanka's Southern Province have initiated a comprehensive security assessment at multiple correctional facilities after receiving intelligence reports of potential unrest similar to recent incidents at other prisons.
An emergency security meeting convened by Southern Province Governor Prof. Susiripala Manawadu has triggered a province-wide review of prison security measures. The gathering was prompted by intelligence assessments indicating possible risks of disturbances at correctional facilities across the region, mirroring earlier disruptions reported at Negombo and Mahara prisons.
During the session, officials examined security concerns and discussed preventative strategies aimed at safeguarding prison personnel, detainees, and infrastructure. The committee identified five facilities requiring immediate security evaluations: Boossa, Galle, Matara, Agunukolapelessa, and Weerawila prisons. Authorities plan to implement additional protective measures where deemed appropriate following these assessments.
In response to the security concerns, the committee authorized the establishment of an emergency response framework designed to enable rapid intervention during any crisis situations. The new mechanism aims to strengthen coordination between security agencies and prison management to address potential incidents swiftly and effectively.
