President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has directed accelerated development of Sri Lanka's judicial infrastructure, with focus on completing court complexes across multiple locations and modernising support services.
The government has outlined an ambitious plan to strengthen judicial capacity and reduce delays in court proceedings. During a progress review at the Presidential Secretariat, President Dissanayake emphasised the importance of building a justice system capable of serving the public efficiently. The initiative encompasses construction work on several major projects, including the Colombo High Court Complex, a new Ministry of Justice building, and the Hulfsdorp Court Complex.
Expanded court facilities are planned for multiple districts, with new complexes under development in Galle, Matale, Kanthale, and other locations. Additionally, a judges' official housing project that was suspended during the 2022 economic crisis is being reconsidered for completion. According to the Presidential Media Division, these developments form part of a broader modernisation effort across the justice sector.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the government aims to enhance operational capabilities within key judicial institutions. Plans include strengthening the Department of the Legal Draftsman through additional staffing and technology upgrades. The Government Analyst's Department is targeted for expansion, with authorities instructed to increase monthly forensic report production to 9,000 and to relocate the department to improved facilities.
The review also addressed welfare improvements for prison officers and discussed consolidating rehabilitation programmes currently operated separately by the Police, Ministry of Health, and Department of Social Services under unified coordination. These combined measures reflect the administration's intention to modernise the justice system comprehensively.
