Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology has issued a heat advisory for eight districts as the sun moves directly overhead the island, with temperatures already reaching above 36°C in several areas.
The Department of Meteorology has flagged elevated heat index levels across eight districts tomorrow, requiring residents to exercise caution during the period of intense solar exposure. The affected areas are Trincomalee, Ampara, Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Monaragala, and Jaffna. The advisory comes as the sun reaches a position directly overhead relative to Sri Lanka, a phenomenon that will persist until the 7th of next month. At 12:11 PM tomorrow, the sun will be directly above the northern towns of Kokkuvil, Nallur, Kodikamam, and Nagar Kovil.
Recent temperature readings highlight the severity of current conditions in affected zones. Yesterday's measurements showed Mullaitivu recording the island's highest temperature at 36.7°C, while Trincomalee reached 36.4°C and Polonnaruwa recorded 36°C. The meteorological department has advised residents in these districts to take appropriate precautions during peak heat hours.
Weather patterns remain mixed across the island. Dry conditions continue in the Eastern, North Central, and Uva provinces, alongside parts of Hambantota, Puttalam, and Ratnapura districts. Conversely, southwestern regions experience persistent rainy weather. The department warns of fairly heavy showers exceeding 75 mm expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces as well as the districts of Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Galle, and Matara. During the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 AM today, Laksapana recorded the highest rainfall at 43.5 mm.
