Sri Lanka's Inland Revenue Department has reminded taxpayers of critical payment and filing deadlines for July 2026 taxes, warning that missed deadlines will result in penalties and loss of tax credits.
The Inland Revenue Department has issued formal reminders to taxpayers about upcoming compliance deadlines for two major tax obligations. Payments for the Social Security Contribution Levy (SSCL) relating to July 2026 must be submitted by August 20, 2026, while Value Added Tax (VAT) payments for the same period carry an identical deadline. The department has advised taxpayers to utilize the Online Tax Payment Platform or visit any branch of the Bank of Ceylon for payment processing.
VAT returns present a separate timeline, with online filing required by August 31, 2026—approximately two weeks after the payment deadline. The Inland Revenue Department has specified technical details for both obligations, including relevant tax type codes and period codes necessary for accurate submission.
The department has stressed that failure to meet these deadlines carries significant consequences. Late or incorrect submissions will trigger penalties, and taxpayers who file VAT returns after the deadline face restrictions on input tax credits. Specifically, credits on local purchases become unavailable if not claimed within 12 months of the due date, while import-related credits expire after 24 months from the original deadline.
Taxpayers requiring assistance have been directed to contact the department's hotline at 1944 or consult its official website for detailed guidance. The Inland Revenue Department has emphasized that timely compliance protects taxpayers from financial penalties while preserving their eligibility for legitimate tax credits.
