South Korea's Incheon International Airport has surpassed London's Heathrow to become the world's busiest airport by international passenger traffic in the first half of 2025, driven partly by regional geopolitical factors.
Incheon International Airport has secured the position of world's busiest airport for international passenger movements, handling 38.4 million travelers during the first six months of 2025, according to preliminary data from the Airports Council International. London's Heathrow Airport placed second with 37.79 million passengers, while Singapore's Changi Airport ranked third with 34.53 million.
The South Korean airport's ascent to the top ranking represents a significant shift from its previous standing, having ranked 12th in 2024 and 13th in 2025 based on full-year statistics. Notably, Dubai International Airport, which held the second position in both 2024 and 2025 on an annual basis, is expected to fall outside the top five this period.
Incheon airport officials attributed the growth partly to passenger traffic diversion from Middle Eastern aviation hubs due to geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran. The airport reported an 18% increase in transfer passengers compared to the same period last year, with European-bound connecting travelers rising significantly by 63.2% to reach 210,000. According to the airport corporation, expanded infrastructure capacity played a supporting role in accommodating the increased traffic volume.
The airport, which began operations in 2001, currently serves 158 international destinations—more than competitors including Hong Kong's airport with 139 destinations and Shanghai's Pudong with 92. Incheon airport's acting president Kim Beom-ho stated the corporation plans to maintain competitiveness by prioritizing passenger convenience and expressed gratitude for government support and public backing.
