Sri Lanka's financial sector delivered moderate growth this quarter, with major banks reporting improved earnings, while state enterprises and diplomatic shifts shape the broader economic landscape.
Hatton National Bank reported a quarterly profit of 11.77 billion rupees for the period ending June 30, 2026, marking a marginal 0.3 percent increase from the corresponding quarter last year. The bank's performance was underpinned by a substantial 30 percent surge in net interest income, reaching 34.20 billion rupees, while net fee and commission income rose 19.6 percent to 6.86 billion rupees. The bank's total assets expanded 7.1 percent to 2.83 trillion rupees, with gross loans and advances climbing 15.1 percent to 1.73 trillion rupees. HNB maintained resilient asset quality and strong capital ratios, earning recognition as Best Bank for Large Corporates for the second consecutive year.
In contrast, state-run SriLankan Airlines continues to struggle financially. The airline recorded a net loss of 12.6 billion rupees for the period through August 2025, nearly triple the 4.2 billion rupee loss from the previous year. Currency depreciation significantly worsened the carrier's position, with foreign exchange losses reaching 8.5 billion rupees as the rupee weakened against the dollar. The government is now evaluating a private turnaround proposal from Hong Kong-based Transwell Corporation, while an appointed committee conducts a broader restructuring assessment with recommendations expected within six months.
Other economic developments include the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and Maldives Business Chamber signing a partnership agreement to expand trade and investment opportunities across tourism, logistics, construction, and financial services. Additionally, the government is processing 19 proposals to operationalize the chronically loss-making Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, with formal requests for proposals expected within two months. Meanwhile, Eric Meyer was sworn in as the new US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, succeeding Julie J Chung who departed in January 2026.
