Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal could face sanctions from the International Cricket Council following a heated confrontation with Sri Lankan bowler Asitha Fernando during the second Test in Colombo, where physical contact occurred between the two players.
A confrontation between India's Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando during the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo has drawn the attention of match officials and could result in disciplinary measures from the International Cricket Council.
The incident took place after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal for 45 runs in the opening session. Following the dismissal, Fernando directed a sharp send-off toward the departing batter, which prompted Jaiswal to turn back and engage the bowler. During the subsequent exchange, Jaiswal's helmet made contact with Fernando's forehead before Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva intervened to separate the two players.
India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak acknowledged that while such confrontations can occur in the intensity of competitive cricket, Jaiswal should have exercised restraint. "I don't think he should have been so close," Kotak stated, recognizing that emotions can sometimes escalate during matches. Sri Lankan fast bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk suggested the matter should be assessed by match referee Andy Pycroft rather than commented upon by coaching staff.
The physical contact between the players may fall under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which addresses inappropriate physical contact during international matches. Should officials determine this constitutes a Level 1 offense, potential consequences could include an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50 percent of Jaiswal's match fee, or one to two demerit points. Match officials are expected to review the confrontation to determine whether formal disciplinary action is necessary.
