Sri Lanka has welcomed over 1.46 million tourists since the start of 2026, with Indian visitors leading arrivals across both monthly and yearly figures.
Sri Lanka's tourism sector has maintained steady momentum through August 2026, with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority reporting cumulative arrivals of 1,468,980 visitors from January 1 through August 18. The country attracted 125,562 tourists during the first 18 days of August alone, suggesting continued visitor interest in the island.
Indian nationals have emerged as the primary source of tourism to Sri Lanka this year. During August, India accounted for 27,884 arrivals, significantly outpacing the United Kingdom, which recorded 13,980 visitors, and France, which had 8,776 arrivals. This trend is consistent with year-to-date figures, where India has contributed 366,114 tourists, nearly two-and-a-half times more than the second-ranked United Kingdom with 144,381 arrivals. China rounds out the top three source markets with 97,073 visitors recorded so far this year.
Monthly performance data shows variation throughout the year, with February recording the strongest performance at 279,328 arrivals. The consistent flow of international visitors, particularly from South Asian and European markets, indicates growing confidence in Sri Lanka as a travel destination as the country continues its recovery efforts.
