Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology has confirmed there is no tsunami threat following a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the Indian Ocean near Indonesia early today.

A significant earthquake measuring 7.7 in magnitude struck the Indian Ocean in the early hours of today, with its epicenter located in the Flores Region of Indonesia. According to the Department of Meteorology, the tremor occurred at a depth of 14 kilometres at coordinates 8.51°S latitude and 121.39°E longitude.

Following the seismic event, Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology issued a No Tsunami Threat Bulletin, confirming that there is no risk of tsunami activity affecting the country. The National Tsunami Early Warning Center has determined that all coastal areas remain safe for regular activities and normal operations.

The decision was reached in consultation with relevant national and international agencies, according to statements from both the Department of Meteorology and the Tsunami Early Warning Center. Officials emphasised that comprehensive assessment protocols were followed before issuing the safety confirmation to the public.
