A 30-year-old traveler from Minuwangoda was apprehended at the airport while attempting to bring in foreign cigarettes worth Rs. 6 million that were hidden in luggage.
Authorities have arrested a passenger on suspicion of smuggling foreign-manufactured cigarettes into Sri Lanka through the airport. The 30-year-old suspect, who hails from Divulapitiya in Minuwangoda, was detained by officers from the Police Narcotics Bureau stationed at the airport on August 8.
According to police reports, the individual had traveled from Dubai and allegedly concealed cigarettes valued at approximately Rs. 6 million across two pieces of luggage. Officers intercepted the suspect while he was attempting to exit the airport with the contraband goods.
Following his arrest, the suspect was released on police bail pending court proceedings. He is scheduled to appear before the Negombo Magistrate's Court on August 19 to face charges related to the smuggling attempt.
