Sri Lanka's Transport Minister has unveiled plans for the Colombo Metro Transit system, a modern bus network scheduled to begin full operations next month linking the capital with key suburban areas.

Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake has announced that the Colombo Metro Transit bus network will become fully operational from September, marking a significant expansion of public transport infrastructure in the greater Colombo region.

The initiative encompasses a network of modern bus services designed to enhance connectivity across Colombo and its surrounding areas. According to the Minister, the planned route map includes services connecting the capital to several key suburban destinations and transport hubs, creating multiple transit corridors throughout the metropolitan region.

The announced routes are set to serve Makumbura, Millennium City, Kadawatha, Panadura, and Ekala, along with Kesbewa. Additionally, a circular service is planned for the Kollupitiya area, providing residents with enhanced mobility options within the city center.

The Metro Transit project represents a broader effort to modernize public transportation infrastructure and improve accessibility for commuters traveling between Colombo and its suburbs. Officials have indicated that the network's design prioritizes connecting major population centers and transport interchange points to facilitate smoother commuter flows.
