The dengue epidemic continues to spread across Sri Lanka, with cumulative cases this year now surpassing 89,000 according to the National Dengue Control Unit. The disease has claimed 64 lives to date, underscoring the severity of the ongoing outbreak affecting the island nation.

August has emerged as a particularly concerning month, with 3,686 dengue cases reported during this period alone. This represents a significant surge in weekly case numbers, suggesting transmission remains active across multiple regions. The spike in cases during the monsoon season reflects the conditions favourable for mosquito breeding and disease spread.

Health authorities have identified 119 MOH (Medical Officer of Health) divisions classified as high-risk zones across the country. In response to this classification, the National Dengue Control Unit has intensified mosquito control operations in these vulnerable areas. These activities aim to reduce mosquito populations and interrupt disease transmission chains before cases continue to rise further.
