Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala has attributed death threats directed at the Inspector General of Police to organised drug trafficking networks seeking to obstruct ongoing investigations, while reaffirming the government's commitment to combating narcotics-related crime.

Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala has linked recent death threats against the Inspector General of Police to individuals involved in drug trafficking operations who fear accelerating investigations into their activities. Speaking during parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, the Minister suggested that rapid progress in law enforcement efforts has alarmed those connected to narcotics syndicates, prompting intimidation tactics against police leadership.

Wijepala indicated that the mounting pressure on criminal networks stems from successful overseas operations resulting in extraditions of former associates back to Sri Lanka. According to the Minister, individuals previously confident in their immunity from prosecution now face heightened vulnerability as investigations expand and closer associates face legal consequences. He characterised the death threats as an attempt to destabilise police operations and derail ongoing probes.

The Minister revealed that authorities are investigating alleged assassination threats attributed to a political figure, with the Central Crime Investigation Bureau nearing completion of its inquiry. Wijepala stated that legal action would follow against those found responsible for the threats. He additionally indicated that investigations are examining potential connections between certain politicians, underworld elements, and narcotics networks.

Reaffirming government resolve, Wijepala declared that intimidation campaigns would not deter law enforcement from dismantling organised crime structures or pursuing those who accumulated wealth through drug trafficking. The Minister emphasised that all individuals linked to narcotics operations would face judicial accountability regardless of their previous standing or attempts at intimidation.
