Authorities are investigating the abandonment of a four-year-old girl found roadside in Wattegama, with two adults arrested in connection with the incident.

The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has initiated an inquiry into the abandonment of a young child discovered alone on the roadside in the Wattegama area. According to Deputy Minister Dr. Namal Sudarshana, the National Child Protection Authority and the Department of Probation and Child Care Services have mobilized to address the case and safeguard the child's welfare going forward.

The four-year-old girl was found abandoned on August 13th in the Mudunegammedda locality of Wattegama. She is currently receiving medical treatment at the National Hospital of Kandy following her discovery. Police investigations revealed that the child's 37-year-old mother and her 28-year-old associate were responsible for the abandonment and have been arrested in Hali-Ela.

During the course of the investigation, authorities uncovered evidence suggesting the child had been subjected to physical assault prior to abandonment. The arrests occurred the day following the child's discovery. Child welfare officials are now determining appropriate protective measures and future arrangements for the abandoned child as legal proceedings continue.
