The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory predicting intermittent rainfall in several provinces today, with strong winds expected in elevated and northern areas.
The Department of Meteorology forecasts scattered showers across multiple regions of Sri Lanka today. Rain is expected at intervals in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya. The North-Western Province is anticipated to experience several rounds of showers throughout the day.
Additional rainfall is possible in parts of the Uva Province and in the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, and Hambantota, though these showers are more likely to develop after 2:00 p.m. The remainder of the island is expected to remain largely dry. Authorities have warned that thundershowers may accompany some of the rainfall activity in affected areas.
Wind conditions are also a concern in certain regions. Strong winds ranging between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour are anticipated over the western slopes of the Central Highlands, along with the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces and in Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota, and Matale districts. The public has been advised to exercise caution and take necessary precautions to reduce potential damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning strikes associated with thundershowers.
The Department also noted an astronomical event, indicating that the sun will be directly overhead Sri Lanka until September 7 due to its southward movement, with the solar zenith occurring at approximately 12:11 p.m. today over northern areas.
