Sri Lanka formally opened its inaugural Honorary Consulate in the Kingdom of Cambodia during a ceremony held at Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh on August 5, 2026. The event saw Ambassador E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe present the Letter of Appointment to Pily Wong, establishing him as the first Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Cambodia. The inauguration was attended by high-ranking officials from both nations, including Cambodia's Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr. UN Kheang, along with members of the diplomatic corps, business representatives, and Sri Lankan residents in Cambodia.

Official remarks highlighted the deep historical connections between the two countries, which extend far beyond their formal diplomatic relations established in 1952. Ambassador Edirisinghe emphasized the shared Theravada Buddhist heritage, centuries-old cultural exchanges, ancient maritime trade links, and ongoing people-to-people connections that form the foundation of Sri Lanka-Cambodia relations. She noted that bilateral engagement has accelerated in recent years through high-level political exchanges and expanding economic cooperation, with the new consulate serving as a focal point for strengthening these ties.

Honourary Consul Wong committed to working with the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok and Cambodian authorities to advance trade, investment, tourism, and business partnerships. According to the Colombo Gazette account, Wong has previously provided consular assistance to Sri Lankan nationals, including coordinating repatriations and facilitating emergency travel documents. Cambodia's Dr. UN Kheang described the consulate establishment as an important step in deepening bilateral relations and creating an effective bridge for economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.

The ceremony featured a traditional Robam Choun Por (Blessing Dance) performed by Cambodia's Royal Ballet, symbolizing blessings for peace and prosperity, followed by a reception showcasing Sri Lankan cuisine.
