Sri Lanka has initiated an ambitious digital marketing campaign aimed at attracting over 3 million tourists annually and transforming the sector into a $10 billion industry by 2030, building on record visitor numbers achieved last year.

Sri Lanka's tourism authorities have officially commenced an interim digital and media marketing campaign designed to boost the country's international profile and accelerate visitor growth. The initiative, which began this month and will run until April 2027 with an investment of Rs. 1.5 billion, will initially focus on the Australian market before expanding to major source regions including Germany, Russia, India and China. A substantially larger global campaign with a Rs. 5 billion budget is scheduled to launch in March next year.

According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, the country achieved record tourism performance last year, with 2.36 million visitor arrivals and USD 3.2 billion in tourism revenue. Early data from this year shows positive momentum, with arrivals exceeding 1.4 million by August, prompting authorities to project 2.7 million visitors for 2024. Tourism officials are targeting over 3 million arrivals next year while aiming to generate USD 5 billion in revenue annually.

The broader vision extends to establishing tourism as a USD 10 billion industry by 2030. Deputy Minister Ruwan Ranasinghe attributed Sri Lanka's growing appeal to improvements in economic stability, political governance and international recognition as a safe destination. The campaign will emphasize diverse offerings including eco-tourism, cultural heritage, adventure travel and wellness experiences, with particular focus on younger demographics aged 18 to 35 and digitally-engaged consumers.

Tourism authorities framed the campaign not merely as a sectoral initiative but as part of a comprehensive national branding effort. Officials stressed that the campaign reflects Sri Lanka's broader culture, people and opportunities, aiming to strengthen the country's identity globally while supporting tourism growth through coordinated promotion and new flight connections.
