Two prominent development organizations have consolidated their operations to create the Thabo and Zanele Mbeki Foundation, combining continental policy work with over three decades of community-led initiatives across Africa.

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation and the WDB Trust have officially merged following board approvals in July 2026 to establish the Thabo and Zanele Mbeki Foundation (TZMF). The restructuring reflects an effort to integrate the policy and intellectual contributions of the Mbeki Foundation with the extensive community development experience of the WDB Trust, which has operated for more than 35 years.

Under the new arrangement, the TZMF will function as the primary public-facing organization focused on mission delivery, while the WDB Trust has been reconstituted as the WDB Endowment Trust to serve as the financial backbone. Officials stated that the consolidation aims to preserve both institutional legacies rather than absorb either into the other. The restructuring is expected to proceed through phases, with formal regulatory, tax, governance and operational integration continuing alongside the legal changes that have already taken effect.

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation contributes continental reach through its work on intellectual leadership, policy research, heritage initiatives and leadership development. The WDB Trust brings practical expertise in women-led development, community institution-building, financial inclusion and enterprise support. According to the leadership, this combination will create an integrated approach spanning from strategic dialogue and ideas through to implementation, evidence gathering and policy influence.

The consolidated institution will maintain the African Renaissance as its central framework while positioning women-led development as a core defining feature. A formal public launch is scheduled for November 2026, with official operations commencing on March 1, 2027.
