Police have arrested two men transporting approximately 27,000 milliliters of illicit liquor valued at around Rs. 1 million in a rented luxury vehicle near Colombo.
Authorities have arrested two individuals in the Kindelpitiya area while allegedly transporting a substantial quantity of illegal liquor from Wennappuwa. The suspects, identified as residents of Galthude and Hirana in Panadura, were apprehended following a vehicle search conducted by the Western Province Intelligence Division.
Police seized roughly 27,000 milliliters of illicit liquor packed in eight polythene sacks, with an estimated market value of approximately Rs. 1 million. The contraband was discovered in a rented luxury car whose rear seats had been removed to accommodate the consignment, according to law enforcement officials.
During questioning, the suspects reportedly indicated that the liquor was owned by an alleged illicit dealer operating under the name "Chala" within the Hirana Police Division jurisdiction. Both men were brought before the Panadura Magistrate's Court, where they entered not guilty pleas. The vehicle used in the transport was also seized as part of the investigation.
The Bandaragama Police are continuing their inquiries into the matter, with the case scheduled for further court proceedings at a later date. The arrest marks an effort by authorities to combat the illegal liquor trade in the Western Province.
