A 17-year-old girl was fatally struck when a train collided with her family's vehicle at an ungated railway crossing in Kilinochchi's Ariviyal Nagar area, while two of her siblings sustained injuries.

A tragic accident at an ungated railway crossing in the Ariviyal Nagar area of Kilinochchi claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl on Tuesday. The Mount Lavinia to Kankesanthurai bound train struck the vehicle as it was traversing the railway line, according to police reports.

The teenage victim, a resident of Selvanagar, was declared dead at the scene. Two of her siblings travelling in the same vehicle suffered injuries in the collision—a 9-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy—and were transported to Kilinochchi Hospital for treatment. The three children were siblings from the same family.

The vehicle's occupants included the children's parents, who were driving and accompanying them. According to police, neither parent sustained injuries in the incident. The collision has raised concerns about safety measures at the ungated crossing, where vehicles and trains share passage without adequate protective barriers.
